Santa Barbara, Ca. – June 10, 2019 – The 2019 Ramsey Asphalt Construction Vic Graber Final was played on a sunny Sunday afternoon in front of a full grandstand at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club. It was a showdown between Danny Walker’s Farmers and Merchants Bank Polo Team (FMB) and Geoff Palmer’s Antelope Polo.
FMB started off strong showing great chemistry on their team with two father-son duo’s. Danny Walker put the first goal on the board shortly followed up by Lucitas Criado. Antelope’s Maco Llambias quickly retaliated with two back to back goals from the field, and a penalty conversion by Hilario Figueras allowed Antelope to finish the first chukker leading by one.
FMB had a strong start to the second chukker with two noteworthy goals by father and son Lucas and Lucitas Criado. However these very closely matched teams ended the second chukker tied at five apiece.
Early on in the third chukker FMB’s seven goal player Lucas Criado suffered an injury forcing him to be replaced by five goal player Santiago Von Wernich. FMB played the remainder of the match with a ten goal team.
As FMB was adjusting to the chemistry of the new team, Antelope took advantage and quickly took over the lead. Without their highest rated player FMB struggled to score from the field, but the team showed impeccable discipline in defense leaving Antelope scoreless in the fifth chukker. Danny Walker scored five open goals boasting a perfect record on penalty shots which gave them the edge to take the lead. Walker scored a goal from the field in the final chukker to win the game 12-10.
Farmers and Merchants Bank’s Danny Walker was awarded MVP and Antelope’s Santi Trotz’s third chukker mare Muñeca was awarded best playing pony.
Danny Walker commented on the game, “Team FMB is delighted with the win of the Vic Graber Memorial Tournament. Delighted because two Father’s were allowed to enjoy playing with their two sons, a most unusual team in modern polo. Delighted that Lucas Criado, who was injured in the 3rd chukker did not sustain injuries that will disable him from 2019 High Goal polo season. Delighted that Santiago Von Wernich agreed to join Team FMB and be a contributor to a winning day. Amazing to see Lukitas Criado and Matthew Walker accept additional responsibility in defending FMB against Antelope as Santiago Von Wernich got up to speed. A great day for Team FMB, for USPA polo and for Father & Sons to realize that playing together is a historical event/tradition in the world of polo.
As the MVP, I am proud to be selected when there were many contributors to a winning day by Team FMB. 100% of our penalty shots, two penalty 4’s and five open goal penalties were secured. Proud that our horses played well in preparation for this finals by our dedicated staff horse management. MVP comes from the ingredients of great horses, great teammates, and a commitment to successful unselfish play.”
