Littleton, Colo. – July 31, 2017 – Valiente claimed their second consecutive victory Sunday in the 20-goal Columbine Cup, defeating Kentucky 13-8 at Valiente Polo Farm in Littleton, Colorado.
Valiente was in classic form, with Adolfo Cambiaso calling the shots and sending his #2 player, Kian Hall, on a series of search-and-destroy missions. Hall, who can lay a lethal bump at speed, was formidable on his string of supersonic ponies. The combined force of Cambiaso and Hall pretty much terrorized Kentucky all afternoon. The pair scored most of the goals, with Hall so clearly capable that a teammate screamed an ear-shattering “Give it to him!” as Hall caught up with a teammate who was headed for goal. With Kentucky closing in, Hall took the pass and scored.
His Kentucky counterpart at #2, Guille Terrera, tore up the field in the second and third chukkers. Terrera made two stunning goals precisely when his team needed them. The first gave Kentucky their one and only lead in the game (4-3) when Terrera launched into a breakaway and lurched three lengths ahead of a thundering squad of blue jerseys. His next goal tied the game at 5.
The second half opened with a 7-6 advantage for Valiente, who continued to stretch the gap until the action stalled for a stretch in the fifth chukker. A frustrated Cambiaso cast a glare at two teammates who had just blown a scoring opportunity by being late to a play. He shouted in Spanish, “For the love of god, let’s get moving!”
A far more relaxed Cambiaso kicked back in the team tent after Valiente’s 13-8 victory. Wearing a bemused expression, he looked at patron Bob Jornayvaz and relived a play from the final chukker. “Hey, Bob, what did we do there?” Cambiaso asked. Motioning with his hands, he said, “You did that, so I did this.” He laughed. “I don’t know what it was, but at least we made the play!”
The tournament continues Thursday, August 3, and concludes Sunday, August 6, with the final.
